Ross McKee Foundation Grants
The Ross McKee Foundation supports initiatives that advance its mission of promoting piano performance and piano education in the San Francisco Bay Area. Through its grantmaking, the Foundation seeks to encourage artistic excellence, expand educational opportunities, and strengthen the regional ecosystem for young pianists and the organizations that support them.
Grants typically support performances, educational programs, artist development initiatives, and community-based projects that elevate piano artistry and create meaningful opportunities for students, emerging artists, and audiences.
Updated Grantmaking Approach
The Foundation refined its grantmaking process in 2026 to provide greater clarity and consistency for applicants. The Foundation now operates primarily through an annual grant cycle, which generally launches in the winter months, allowing organizations to plan projects with a clear timeline for consideration and funding decisions.
2026 represents a transition year as the updated grantmaking program is implemented. For this cycle, applications are due Friday, April 17, with proposals reviewed by the Board and funding decisions made in early May.
Projects should generally be proposed at least six months before the start of any public activity, ensuring that Foundation support meaningfully contributes to project planning and execution. Funded projects are typically expected to occur within twelve months of the award, though some flexibility may be considered for multi-phase initiatives or extended program timelines.
What We Look For
Successful proposals typically demonstrate:
- Alignment with the Foundation’s mission to support piano performance and education
- Clear artistic or educational value
- A well-defined project plan and timeline
- Realistic budgeting and organizational capacity
- Meaningful engagement with artists, students, or audiences in the Bay Area
The Foundation awards a limited number of grants each year and encourages applicants to review the guidelines carefully to ensure alignment with the Foundation’s priorities.
Typical Grant Range
Most Ross McKee Foundation grants are $5,000 or less. The Foundation may also maintain a small number of ongoing or multi-year partnerships with organizations that closely align with its mission.
Because funding is limited, grants are intended to meaningfully support a project rather than fully underwrite it, and applicants are encouraged to demonstrate additional sources of support when possible.
Projects That May Not Be a Fit
While the Foundation seeks to support a wide range of piano-related initiatives, some proposals may fall outside the scope of the Foundation’s priorities. These may include:
- Projects without a clear connection to piano performance or piano education
- Activities occurring outside the San Francisco Bay Area
- Requests primarily for general operating support
- Projects that have already taken place or are scheduled to occur before the grant decision timeline
Reviewing the FAQs can help determine whether a project aligns with the Foundation’s funding priorities.
Grant Requirements
Organizations receiving support from the Ross McKee Foundation are expected to:
- Acknowledge the Foundation in programs, publicity, and related materials
- Notify the Foundation if there are significant changes to the funded project
- Submit a brief final report approximately 30 days after project completion, including a summary of activities, audience reach, and a final budget
These reports help the Foundation understand the impact of its funding and inform future grantmaking.
